Description

This is one of the three Buddha statues excavated from the Seohyeolsa Temple Site. The temple was opened during the Baekje Period to be operated on a small scale until it was systemized during the Unified Silla Period. The face with curled hair was depicted to be slightly long, with the eyes, nose, and mouth made very small. The robe draped over the shoulders looks thin. The pleats make curves on the belly, but the entirely regular and thin parallel lines make it look weak. It is cross-legged, with both legs put on the knees and the soles of the feet facing upward. The right hand is placed on the knee, fingers stretching downward. The pedestal on which the Buddha statue sits consists of the top, middle, and bottom parts. A lotus in full bloom and several lotus flowers pointing downward are carved on the top and bottom parts of the pedestal, respectively. In this statue, the animated and vigorous aspects are gone, and the detailed carving -- especially on the pleats -- tends to be schematized.
