Description
This calligraphic transcription of a short poetic work by Chaho Hogong titled Calling in Again and Living Together was written by Kim Jeong-hui (1786-1856) in clerical script. Composed of fourteen Chinese characters arranged in couplets on two sheets of paper, the poem reads: I summon up the bright moon again to make three friends / And live together with apricot blossoms on the same mountain. The postscript (作蜀隸法) on the second paper shows that the work was inspired by the script of an inscription engraved on a tomb stele dating back to Shu (221–263), one of the three major states of the Three Kingdoms period (220–280) in ancient China. The clerical script used by the calligraphers of Shu is characterized by tidy forms and an antique style compared with that of the Han, which featured somewhat sharp and wild strokes. The work is a fine example of the calligraphy of Kim Jeong-hui, which was closely related with his outstanding achievements in the field of epigraphy. With the broad space between brushstrokes of varying thickness and the flying white effect created by his fast dry brush technique, this calligraphic work is regarded as one of the finest examples of Kim Jeong-hui’s masterful brushing technique.
