Description
This album of artworks, titled Orchid Oaths (Nanmaengcheop), comprises sixteen ink wash orchid paintings and seven calligraphic works produced by Kim Jeong-hui (1786-1856) to offer as a gift to Yu Myeong-hun, a scroll mounter who worked exclusively for Kim Jeong-hui. Kim Jeong-hui mastered almost all the genres of traditional ink wash painting, including that of the Four Noble Beings (Sagunja), but this album is the only collection of his ink wash orchid paintings. The paintings in this collection are characterized by the diversity of the compositions and the use of a freehand style to capture the hidden meaning of the subject, namely the orchid, chosen for artistic expression. The introductory notes written on the paintings are largely connected with famous historical figures and episodes related with orchids and orchid paintings in Chinese history, revealing that Kim Jeong-hui had a profound knowledge of literature, history and philosophy as well as art. The paintings in this album show the influence of his calligraphic style on his orchid paintings and are highly regarded for the influence they had upon literati artists of later generations.
