Description
This statue was originally on the roadside of the valley in front of Unjangam Hermitage before it was moved to its current location around 1900 when the hermitage was rebuilt. After the hair was raised like a topknot, a flame pattern and a newly made crown were added. Some strands of hair drooped onto the front and back of the shoulders. The adequately fleshy face is well-harmonized with the eyes, nose, and mouth, with the shoulders under the face. The three lines carved on the neck are expressed up to the top of the chest. The pleats are softly hanging down, and the rear side of the Buddha statue is also expressed in detail. Decorative ornaments can be found on the chest, with a knot tying the clothes worn inside expressed on the belly. The right hand raised up to the chest has the thumb and third finger touching on each other, forming the hand of Amitabha Buddha. This Bodhisattva has a style similar to the Gilt-bronze Seated Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva of Daeseungsa Temple in Mungyeong and seems to have been created in the late Goryeo or early Joseon Period. Among the relics discovered within the statue, the Buddhist scriptures published under the rule of King Jungjong are important materials in estimating the statue’s production year.
