Description
Songjo pyojeon chongnyu (Collection of Appeals and Letters to the Emperors of the Song Dynasty), Volumes 6~11 Songjo pyojeon chongnyu is a collection of books that was compiled in the early Joseon period by collecting and categorizing exemplary memorials to the King and Crown Prince originating from the Song Dynasty of China, for use as a reference material in drafting the country’s protocols. The books were printed in small and medium-sized characters with Gyemi metal type made in 1403 (the 3rd year of the reign of King Taejong). The extant copies of Songjo pyojeon chongnyu are rare, well-preserved works among the books printed with metal movable type at that time. The copies kept at the Kyujanggak Institute for Korean Studies of SNU consist of seven parts in total (National Treasure No. 150). Although Songjo pyojeon chongnyu is currently composed of three books and six volumes, its scope will be broadened by the inclusion of those volumes that have already been designated as National Treasures. It is assumed that Songjo pyojeon chongnyu dates from the early period of King Taejong’s reign judging by the use of small-sized letters in the Gyemi metal types. The books are regarded as extremely valuable materials for scholars of the country’s history of typecasting and typesetting skills as they were printed with the earliest government-made movable metal types to be made after the foundation of the new Joseon dynasty.
